Cleanly Installed over XP,
I installed this over XP as part of a general upgrade; CPU, motherboard, more memory and a video card for my wife’s PC (yes I am a tinkerer). Installed cleanly. In spite of being SP1 it screwed around for several days downloading and installing upgrades – a minor annoyance (with cable internet – would be ugly with dialup). Looks good, runs good, no crashes (although XP was pretty stable in my environment). Of the upgrades I added a new copy of Windows Office home and student ed so the thing is pretty clean these days. My wife didn’t jump for joy at any of this but she’s acting like she’s pretty comfortable with it and now she uses it a lot (the whole thing is considerably faster) and that’s as high a compliment as you get from that quarter. Yeah I hate that it’s constantly asking permission (I’ll get in and fix that shortly). I don’t hate that it blocks popups. The final results were worth the trouble (there was not much)to me.

Works fine,
I got a new pc, 2.2 GHZ processor, 1 GB Ram. Mobo video card is 256 MB, I believe. Got it with Windows XP. Decided to buy the Vista upgrade, as I will probably need to deal with it at work. The XP to Vista upgrade worked flawlessly. I chose the Home Basic version because I don’t care about the pretty Aero interface and because the MS update advisor said my graphics card was too light weight.
Works just fine, no complaints. Other than the fact that I will need to support this at work eventually, I see no advantage over a fully patched XP computer. Added security is there, and is not too annoying. Probably good for the less security minded user. Otherwise, not worth the money.
Getting a new pc ? Get Vista. Have a good machine running XP, don’t bother. My rating is based on the OS itself, not whether you should upgrade. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because MS has really dumbed down their file browser. It’s as bad as Mac OS X. Probably not a big deal to most users.

Microsoft Vista Home Basic,
One word Horrible! I had three running systems operating on Vista, three different computer manufacturers as well, All three crashed when installing the latest updates and one also destroyed my hard drive. I am going to downgrade my other laptop and desktop to Windows XP which to me was more stable. And of Course Microsoft was no help just to tellme to upgrade at full price to Windows 7
